DIY Gilded Stone Coasters

I should preface by saying I am definitely not the crafty type. At all. And I'll follow it up by saying, if I can do this DIY project, anyone can.

Months ago I was spending far too much time cruising the endless black hole known as Pinterest and I came upon these schnazzy RabLabs Lumino coasters. For $150.

Not being able to justify the cost, I pinned them and moved on.

Fast forward a few months and I find myself perusing the dusty trinket bins at a General Store in the middle of Death Valley. That's when I happened upon these chunky stone slabs for a bargain basement price of $7 each.

They reminded me so much of the fancy RabLabs coasters that I thought, 'surely I can DIY this!'. I hurried over to the craft store when I returned home to collect a few supplies.

I'm pleased as punch with how they turned out. I just had to show them off to you guys. Aren't they rock-in? Sorry, just had to.

They were ridiculously easy to make but more importantly, a grand total of $30 for two compared to $150 for a set of 4. And a heck of a lot chunkier than the RabLabs originals.

For your RabLabs Copycat Gilded Stone Coasters, you'll need...

2-4 Stone Slabs - check places like old tour mines or festivals

Metallic Paint

Cheap Sponge Brushes

Painter's Tape

Gold or Silver Leafing

Start by giving your stones a good scrub down to remove any dirt. Then tape the edges with painter's tape to prevent any paint leakage onto the stone surface.

Apply a few layers of the metallic paint. I'm more of a silver gal myself, but the gold is pretty too.

Then wait patiently for them to dry...

The messy leafing paper intimidated me so I went with the safer (and easier) silver leafing pen. Whatever your leafing preference, slap a layer over top of the dried paint.

The metallic paint ended up serving as a great base for the leafing. I'm not sure the leafing alone would have been thick enough to cover the rough edges of the rock.

As an afterthought, I've added a few of those felt sticky things to the bottom of the coasters so they don't scratch the table surface.

I love how unique they are and a little bit posh with the gilded edges. With the holidays just around the corner, these would make awesome gifts. Kind of wishing I had bought more.

Now you can kick back with a cuppa whatever you love and a good book...or just listen to some music...

"I'm so fancy, you already know..."

Voila my friends! DIY Copycat RabLabs Gilded Stone Coasters.
