4 Spring Cleaning Tips : Closet Clear-Out

Welcome to my closet. It's taken me a long time to procure the contents and now it's time for spring cleaning closet clear-out. Here are 4 tips to help you whip your closet into shape this spring.

I happily left behind my corporate days filled with pressed trousers, button up shirts and professional heels. Nights filled with sequined tube tops and mini skirts also seem a distant memory.

I'm quite pleased to be living in the world of jeans and tee shirts, the occasional flirty dress and shoes that run the gamut from fancy to practical. I dress for me, not a corporate handbook or that cute guy at the bar. And it's sooo nice.

So, enough about all that. Time to get down to the nitty gritty. Here are my top 4 tips for a spring closet clear-out.

1 // The Three Pile Rule

Cleaning out your closet can be a daunting task. Organizing rejected items will help keep you moving along. Hence, the three pile rule.

-- 1st Pile --  Repurpose Items. Lightly worn, clean, or wrong size items. There are lots of folks less fortunate than you and I who would happily give your no longer wanted clothing a new home. In the US Goodwill has locations all over and in the UK Oxfam is a similar organization.

-- 2nd Pile -- Trash Items. Broken shoes, torn clothing, severely outdated styles, or lingerie.

-- 3rd Pile -- Sale Items. If you have electronics or unworn clothing with tags still attached you may want to consider selling them on online.

2 // When in Doubt, Throw it Out

A philosophy I have long subscribed to as a self-proclaimed 'neat freak'. Although these days, with a +1 (toddler for you newbies), my definition of 'neat' has morphed a bit.

If this is a bit too cut throat for you then I'd suggest tossing the item in doubt if it's been longer than a year since you've worn it.

3 // Don't Try it On

Trust me on this one. Our minds have a sneaky way of convincing us that the shirt we haven't worn for 4 years still fits and looks cute, so maybe we should just keep it.

What you've got to ask yourself is, why haven't you worn it in the past three years? Odds are, you probably won't wear it anytime in the next four years. Put the shirt down and walk away!

4 // Stay Focused

I don't know about you, but I can get easily distracted during projects I don't particularly enjoy. Cleaning and packing fall into this category. My best advice is to leave your phone in the other room, put some good music on and plow through it.

Stay focused and get it done in one go. You'll be happy you did. There's a reason why it's called 'spring cleaning'. Nobody really wants to do it in the summer, fall and winter as well.

Now that the job is done, time to marvel at some of the horrifying items I was more than happy to part ways with.

Clockwise from top left:
// They may be cute, but they are maternity. Bye bye moo-moos!
// Culottes are not cool. Why did I ever wear a trouser that made me look 2x bigger?
// There is a time and place for heavily bedazzled tops. That day has long since passed for me.

You know what they say, out with the old, in with the new. Time to go shopping. I've got closet space to fill!

What horrific old finds did you part with during your spring cleaning?
