If You See Lucy

First of all, you need to know Lucy is a Sci-Fi movie. By the same guy who directed The Fifth Element. There, expectations set. I actually kinda liked The Fifth Element so I walked in to Lucy with a bit of optimism.

Let's be honest though, for a gal who's top three movies are Seven Years in Tibet, Bridget Jones, and The Thomas Crowne Affair, I'd hardly say Lucy was my top choice for a morning at the cinema. However, when the opportunity to have a morning sans-Little Man presented itself, I would have seen just about anything showing.

With limited options for our time frame, Lucy seemed like the best bet.

Okay so the premise of the movie is a girl, Lucy, living in Tokyo who gets tangled up with some real baddies who decide to stick a pouch of some sketchy new drug in her abdomen. Then they force her onto the next flight to Paris in an attempt to smuggle the drug into Europe for distribution.

Lucy's not the only one, there are about 4 other people being sent to various other European cities with their 'cargo'. But I'm sure you've guessed that Lucy isn't like the others. The pouch of drugs breaks open inside of her causing some....unusual side affects. Basically giving her access, gradually, to every area of her brain. I.e. Lucy becomes super human and fights back.

No love romance or tender moments here.

From then on the movie gets progressively stranger. Don't get me wrong, I like a good Sci-Fi once and a while, like the original Star Wars.

But I think what makes a good Sci-Fi really good is the ability to make you forget how ridiculously crazy the plot actually is. Light sabers, space ships and well, Yoda? Don't care. I get so wrapped up in the story and the characters that it doesn't matter how wacky the plot gets.

Lucy, unfortunately, didn't fall into this category for me. It was quite the opposite. I was so distracted by how ridiculous it all was that I couldn't help but giggle a few times out loud during what were meant to be serious plot twists.

Example? The moment Lucy's baggie of drugs explodes inside of her and she starts spazzing and having convulsions on every single surface of the holding cell she's locked in. Including the ceiling. Kind of like a fish out of water, flopping around.

One great thing about Lucy? It's only 90 minutes.

Hey ho. Not every film is meant to be loved by every person. I guess for now I'll stick to my good old epic travel and love films with a little bit o' Bridget Jones for a good laugh. Can't wait for the third one by the way!

What's your favorite movie? Have you seen Lucy? What did you think?
