Hyperlapse Quick Tips

A few super quick tips to making super quick time lapse videos using the Hyperlapse app.

I have precious little space left on my iPhone. When Instagram released their new app, Hyperlapse, earlier this week, I knew it would be worth the last bit of memory. I've been playing with it all week. It's very addictive.

First, a little background:

What is Hyperlapse and what makes it so special?

It is Instagram's new, standalone app turns your smartphone videoclips into high speed time lapse style videos. It's free on the app store too!

They've created an algorithm that not only speeds up your video, but stabilizes it too. It can be really hard to hold your phone steady while taking a video. Yay skakey-handed-people! Here's a before and after.

Quick Tips for Making Great Hyperlapse Videos

// Hold your phone steady or use a tripod.

The steadier the camera, the more focus and attention there is on the movement within the video.

// Keep it 3 minutes or less for posting to Instagram.

The optimal Hyperlapse video length for posting to Instagram is around 3 minutes if you want your full video shown in the 15 second Instagram limit. However, Hyperlapse has a maximum recording time of 45 minutes.

// Film moving objects.

The most interesting videos are the ones that have one or many moving objects. Cars on a busy street, people dancing, dogs running, ants marching.

// Add music and get creative.

Although you have the option to easily post your Hyperlapse video directly to Instagram or Facebook, you don't have to.

After you've finished recording and editing your video it is automatically saved to your phone's camera roll. You can then upload it to a video editing program like iMovie to add elements to it such as your favorite music.

Hyperlapse videos do not record sound. Why? Think Alvin and the Chipmunks. High speed audio isn't the loveliest of noises. Adding a little background music can set the tone for your video.

// Play with the Focus Lock feature.

Hyperlapse has a focus lock feature which allows you to focus on one area or object in the frame during or throughout filming. You can tap anywhere on the screen before or during filming to focus and if you tap and hold until you hear the beep you'll lock the focus on that area for the entire video.

This is a great feature because with so many moving objects things can go in and out of focus but you are able to tell the camera what to stay focused on.
