You've probably heard me mention that quote before. I love it. There have been so many times in my life when I've discovered something about myself, or my life, while traveling far from home.
Maybe it's the change of scenery. Maybe it's the shock to the senses. Maybe it's the quiet and the unknown. Whatever it is, that's what I love about traveling.
My most recent revelation occurred quite literally in the middle of 'nowhere'. Well, kind of. When you're roaming amongst 3.1 million acres of desert in the hottest place on earth, I think 'middle of nowhere' is applicable.
We were hiking the Golden Canyon Trail in Death Valley when an overwhelming sense of gratitude washed over me. Gratitude for civilization and modern conveniences. Something I'm sure many of us are guilty of taking for granted.
No cell phone reception. Patchy internet at best. Just you and the sound of your own voice and those who are with you. As much as I loved taking it all in and enjoying the surroundings, after several days, I started to desperately miss the outside world.
The locals reminded me daily that the life I live in Atlanta is a world of modern convenience and exceptional fortune in comparison to the simplicity and often harsh environments of places like Death Valley.
So grateful to be able to enjoy these breathtaking natural wonders and return to a home filled with good fortune.
PS - I have a milion and one photos from our trip across the Southwest so stay tuned for some exciting travel posts!! In the meantime, follow my journey day by day on Instagram.
