How Music Defines You

I've always been amazed at the power that music has on our mind, body and soul. I recently thought through some of the most defining songs of my life. It's crazy the wide range of music genres I can love depending on my mood.

Isn't is amazing the way music can instantly lift us up, immediately bring us to a sad place, or invoke just about any emotion in between? Or in my case, completely define chapters of your life.

Songs that defined my...

// adolescence



I'll never forget the day my older sister (who, as a teenager, usually wanted nothing to do with me) urgently pulled me into her bedroom and sat me down in front of her boom box for a lesson in 'real music'. She played me this song. We sat in silence admiring the words that later defined a generation.

// wild times



I knew some EDM long before meeting E. But I didn't know EDM until I met E. The beaches of Ibiza. The clubs in London. The nights at our friends houses. PS - It really kicks in at 1:45.

// happiest moments



Some of the best memories to date in my life. Dancing around the kitchen with E like a pair of loonies while Little Man looked on in amusement. The entire Pryda album by Eric Prydz just fills me with happiness.

And anything Cold Play...

My years of independence. My years of summer memories floating down the rivers of Southern Missouri with friends I'll never forget.

// meditation



Some songs never get 'old'. No matter how many years go by. They always have the ability to put you in a trance and take you to a place of reflection and, for me, a happy meditation on the life you have and the life you want. That has always been, and will probably always be, this oddly transfixing tune by FSOL.

I've been listening to it since I was a tween and it still takes me to a still place deep inside my mind.

I love that this song reminds me of my parents when they were younger and stories of when they first met and used to 'groove out' to Stevie. Those jive turkies!

// song of a nation...since it's the Fourth of July after all!!
