Memories of Athens, Greece

If you can look beyond the debt crisis and know a few tricks for saving money, Athens, Greece is a city packed with memories to last a lifetime. Here are my favorite spots and memories from Athens.

Acopolis. Parthenon. Parthenon. Acropolis. No matter how many times I ask E, I still can't seem to remember which one is the monument. To set the record straight (and my mind), here is the Parthenon in all of it's glory.

And here is a view from the top of the Acropolis, upon which the Parthenon stands.

Sadly, there was a load of renovation taking place when we visited. Despite all the scaffolding and stray dogs (which I sooo badly wanted to take home with me), it still takes your breath away.

Photos just don't do it justice I'm afraid. Like the Great Pyramid of Giza, it's truly awe inspiring to stand at the foot (and inside of) a structure built so long ago.

While I jumped at the opportunity to walk among the ruins I couldn't help but feel a tinge of disappointment at the sad state of the Parthenon and the masses upon masses of people clambering around the outside and running their fingers along the weathered stone. I hate to say it, but I think it might be time to restrict the close proximity access before the whole thing collapses into rubble.

Athens is a city littered with ancient ruins. A needed respite for the eyes from all the smog and noise of the modern-day Athens.

At the base of the Acropolis is the imposing Temple of Olympian Zeus. Once, the largest temples on mainland Greece; it made us feel so small.

As we walked back to our hotel, we happened upon the changing of the guards. Yep, not just for the handsome chaps at Buckingham Palace! Check out those pom poms. Stylin!

I always knew we were close to the hotel when we found the Running Man statue.

My favorite memories from our trip to Athens were actually not in Athens at all. We took a bus out of town to visit the ruins at Delphi. If you're headed that way, Delphi is so worth the journey.

I mean, just look at the view!

Summed up in two words: eerily beautiful.

Now that we've 'been there, done that', I'm not sure Athens is a city I'd been keen to visit again. But we sure do have some lovely memories.

Have you been to Athens? What are some of your favorite memories?
