Grey Skies & Red Houses

Did you know that there is a day each year where Museums open their doors for free across the country? Sounds like the perfect day for this threesome to get a bit of culture.

Unlike so many of the amazing and free museums of England, over here in the states, most of our big museums charge entry fees. Sometimes quite steep. So when I heard the Smithsonian was hosting a free admission day (#museumdaylive) nationwide, I jumped on it.

Off to the High Museum of Art in downtown Atlanta we went on a very gray and gloomy Saturday. Not so different from England after all.

First stop was the Mi Casa Your Casa outdoor display. Rows upon rows of shockingly red 'houses' with hammocks strung inside each.

Be free Little Man!!

Don't forget to mind the 'House Rules'.

The inside of the High Museum is as modern, clean and architecturally interesting as one might expect. Very Gugenheim-esq. Pretty.

Follow that kid!

The art was diverse. Ranging from Honest Abe and his stone-faced friends,

to the ornate,

to the scary,

and the odd,

to the downright bizarre.

And back again. There were even a few things that had us really curious. Chair or sculpture? Or both....

A digital clock being hand painted by the minute to precise time.

They even had a little something for The Littles.

By the time we left the sun had started to make an appearance.

The High Museum is a beautiful place to spend a little time on a rainy morning. It was an absolute bargain visiting on #museumdaylive. Most days tickets run $19 per adult.

And to think, I wandered among ancient Egyptian mummies and the Rosetta Stone for free at the British Museum!

If you're into museums you should check out my pal Robert's recent post series on the great British Museums. Some of the best in the world.

What did you get up to this weekend?
